In life's tragedies and hardships of war, unfortunate deaths, illness, daily problems and hassles, aren't we fortunate that we can get some pleasure out of the little things that our dogs do for us that can mean so much each day? Early morning: by 6:00 a.m. this morning, my pup had already tried to eat the remote control (her third), took the stuffing out of a comforter, and annoyed her companion (my other dog) with a 'play with me or else' attitude. You may be thinking 'why doesn't she train this dog?' She's been through two training courses. But it made me laugh as I struggled to go to work! Morning progression: as I arrived at work, I found pleasure in looking at the photograph on my desk of my two dogs as I worked hard on my daily tasks. I found myself missing them and wondering what they were doing. As their faces glared out at me, it was a bit easier to get through the work day. Work day evolves: Luckily, I am surrounded by dog lovers at work who always have a story to tell about their dogs. Sharing these 'tales' (pun intended), I realize once again how much they influence and add to our lives. I never take that for granted. Driving home: The traffic is typical for L.A., but it will just be a while until our companions await us with wagging tails and determination to influence us to pay attention to them. They find pleasure in the little things too. They marvel at a bird flying around outside; they love life and everything about it. So it makes the $274 electric bill this month worthwhile from leaving the air conditioning on to make them comfortable. The evening and social hour: They are such good company to accompany me to an outdoor concert, visit a friend, or just 'hang out with.' Sleep: They are still energetic no matter what time. Watching their habits and 'quirks' makes me smile. One loves it under the bed, one is on his back hoping he gets a tummy rub. One plays with toys and even settles for any semblance of a toy (like a piece of my clothing that she parades around the house with). Hitting the pillow, knowing I have dogs who unconditionally care for me, makes it all worthwhile. What simple pleasures do you get from your Wheatens? |
