BALANCE WORK Everything done in agility could fall under this category, but since very few people have the agility equipment in their yards, this list contains tricks that can be done with special, complicated equipment, · Jumping — easy and great fun, this can be practiced almost everywhere. This can also be done with very young dogs, just don’t make the jumps too high. You can jump over anything, even the LA phone book on the living room floor. · Climbing an object—boulder, chair, log. Even though this may be difficult at first, dogs get good at this with practice. You can progress to asking the dog to sit or lie down when he is up on the desired object as he gets more confident. Do you use a grooming table? Practice here letting your dog lie and sit. How about your ironing board. Challenge your dog; it’s fun and good for his mental and physical development. · Balance walking—ask your dog to walk a narrow plank, tree branch, etc. Start with wider objects and work down. You can lay a ladder out on the ground and have the dog walk through it. This teaches him where his back feet are. Find a creek and you can let your dog walk along some stones (ok, be sure they are secure and not too wobbly.) REMINDER Did your dog finish a title this year (conformation, obedience, rally, agility)? We are giving awards to dog and handler at the Annual Awards Dinner in December. Don’t forget to look for the awards form in the November meeting annoucement and be sure your dog is included this year. *************** YOUR DOG’S BEST FRIEND IS HIS VET. HAVE YOU BEEN TO VISIT HIM LATELY? LOVE YOUR WHEATEN AND KEEP HIM HEALTHY AND HAPPY. |
