Dear Mom,

     We try to be good owners and keep our dogs in shape by walking most days. One of my neighbors walks her dog with the dog wearing a pack that looks like a horse’s saddle bags to me. What is that about?

Dear Confused,

     Mom’s guess is this owner is giving her dog a job to do while they walk. There is no reason you can’t give your dog a “job” while you walk too. The dog can easily carry poop bags and water in his pack. You could have the dog help carry the trash or recyclables you find along your walk too. Dogs should be taken out daily for exercise to stimulate their senses. The fresh air is good for you both and a gentle aerobic activity shouldn’t hurt. Get a pack that fits your dog and don’t overdo to begin with.
