WHAT’S IN A NAME?

Finding that special name for your Wheaten, both call and registered, can be challenging and fun. The name you choose will be part of your life for years to come.

Aside from the practical considerations of considering a name, (it is considered best not to chose a name that sounds like NO, the dog may be hearing enough of that in years to come), you want to pick something that is distinctive, and doesn’t sound like something else the dog will often hear. It is best not to have a Tess, the child, and Bess, the dog, or both may be confused when they hear you calling them. In days past it was considered best not to the have the call name be part of the registered name for fear at a show the dog might be enticed to go with someone calling their name that they did not know. Nowadays many people advertising list both names, and most shows recommend you label crates so it may not be important enough to worry about any longer.

Also many people consider it best not to name your dog Digger, Yapper, Puddles, etc. for fear the dog lives up to his name. We all know Wheaten Harry’s, Murphy’s, or Bridget’s, and maybe living up to their Irish heritage is a good way to go. Was Uncle Max your favorite relative growing up, and you want to honor him? You aren’t alone as gone are the days of Rover, Spot, and Fido. Many dogs now bear human names too. Probably there are as many Baby Name books being sold to perspective human families as those expecting a new little puppy in their life.

Trying to keep the name upbeat and happy is often the best way to go. “Get Off that Penelope Jane!” can be a mouthful when the dog is on the sofa when she shouldn’t be. So “Where’s Penny?” can elicit the wiggles and be easier on all involved sometimes. Find the name that suits you and your family, and have some fun with it too.

May your doctor never earn a dollar out of you,

May your heart never give out,

May the ten toes of your feet steer you clear of misfortune.

And before you’re much older,

May you hear much better blessings than this.
