Harp & Guinness, both 10 years young with lots of spunk, were surrendered by their owner to the Irvine Animal Care Center when she could no longer care for them.
Guinness, a neutered male, is the more outgoing, nudging his long time friend, Harp, a spayed female, so he can befirst to be petted, and leans against you for attention. Both are friendly, well mannered, do well in crowds, and get along with children, and other dogs. They love each other , and would love a home together, but they may be adopted separately.
Adoption fee is $65 each, or $65 if adopted together! Fee includes vacines, microchip, flea and worm treatments, medical history, vet exam and bag of food.
Adoption procedure: Applications are available at the Irvine Animal Care Center, 6444 Oak Canyon Road, Irvine, Ca. For more information call 949-724-7740, or irvineshelter.org . Photos available on that site. Hours: noon to 7pm weekdays, 10am to 5 pm weekends, closed Tuesday & holidays. Adoptions stop one hour prior to closing.

It’s almost time for America’s Family Pet Expo at the O.C. Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa and your Club, the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Club of Southern California is supporting this event. For directions Click here.

We are asking your help to introduce our beloved Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers to the public. We have reserved a booth and need to have Wheatens and their People there to talk with the public. It is important that we be there to show off our Wheatens and help the public understand how very special our Breed is and how important it is to buy from a reputable breeder.

The Expo dates are Friday April 20, Saturday April 21 and Sunday April 22 and our booth hours are 10 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (shifts will be 2 – 4 hours). It’s important to note that this year there are no conflicts between the dates of the Pet Expo and the Northern California Specialty shows, nor with the spring religious holidays.

Please contact Laura Virant at 949.583.2710 (Lav10s@aol.com) or Rose Clime at 949.235.5517 (Moondance_scwt@cox.net) ASAP to reserve your preferred day & time.

Your participation at the SCWTCSC Booth gets you into the Expo for free and you’ll have plenty of time to see the vendors & events while you’re there. Here is the website for the Pet Expo in case you would like to check out the activities that will be going on during the three days. www.petexpooc.com.

Please feel free to contact either Laura or Rose if you have any questions about the event. We’re looking forward to seeing everyone at the Expo and thanking you in advance for your participation.

AKC’s New Therapy Dog Title Program Honors Dogs with the Healing Touch
Therapy dog owners, and those who have benefited from comforting visits with these special canines, have long known this treasured expression of the canine-human bond has a healing touch like no other. Since the American Kennel Club launched its AKC Therapy Dog Title program on June 27, over 1,600 dogs have been recognized for their special abilities to improve the well-being of others. Meet the first dogs to receive the AKC Therapy Dog Title.

On September 11, all working dog teams, veterinarians and veterinary medical assistance teams who served in response to the 9/11 attacks will be honored at Liberty State Park in New Jersey. The sponsoring organization, Finding One Another: Courage Beyond Measure (FAO) has identified over 950 teams (civilian, government, law enforcement and military) involved in diverse efforts at Ground Zero, the Pentagon, Shanksville and the Fresh Kills Landfill recovery site. This is the first time that these incredible dogs have been fully recognized.

The details are available at http://www.findingoneanother.org/recognition-ceremony

FAO needs the support of the dog world to assist in (1) funding the ceremony as well as (2) supporting their ongoing efforts. FAO has requested that our support include sending to the ceremony representatives to sign The Convention on Cooperation Among American Working Dog Organizations. This historic document, first signed at the Doberman Pincher Centennial in Topeka, Kansas in 2008, can be viewed at the following link.

http://www.findingoneanother.org/the-convention-on-cooperation-among-americas-working-dog-organizations.

As the fancy, we have always rallied to help others whose mission is to help dogs. Any contribution is greatly needed, appreciated, and tax deductible.

To make a donation, please go to: http://www.findingoneanother.org/donations

Part of FAO’s mission statement reads (In part) as follows:

Finding One Another (FOA) seeks to support the needs of the SAR (Search and Rescue) field, the individual canines and their first responder human partners, by contributing to the establishment of standards of practice, care and research needed to safeguard all those engaged in this work. Funds generated by Finding One Another will provide financial assistance to:

- underwrite veterinary expenses for those SAR canines in need,

- increase the number of specially trained SAR focused veterinarians,

- expand targeted research benefitting working dogs and their human partners, and,

- develop and implement programs to educate the public, both children and adults, to the work and on-going needs of the SAR community while elevating the human/animal bond and fostering a dialogue toward a more peaceful future.

Thank you for your consideration.

Dr. Carmen L. Battaglia, AKC Board of Directors

Jeff Helsdon, Producer of the Recognition Ceremony

The wheaten terrier temperament is a unique combination of a working dog’s steadiness and the terrier alertness & intelligence. Wheatens are lively and affectionate, and they retain their puppy-like exuberance for their entire life. Wheatens are medium- to high-energy, but are extremely adaptable. They can do well in the city or the country so long as their daily exercise needs are met and their desire to socialize with people is satisfied.

Most wheatens will give an alarm bark if strangers approach, but this fun-loving breed will instantly befriend any new person they meet. Wheatens love to jump and will chase almost anything that moves, so leash-pulling becomes a very common issue with the breed. Like many terriers, wheatens are smart and learn quickly, but they also have a mind of their own and can be stubborn when given commands they do not wish to follow immediately. Consistent, firm discipline will help a wheaten establish his place in the family, but be aware that harsh treatment may break his high spirits. Work, time and dedication is necessary to train these headstrong dogs.

Wheatens and children can mix well so long as the child is considerate and well-behaved. But a wheaten’s energy and activity may overwhelm smaller children. Because wheatens require much time and attention, families with infants and pre-schoolers may do well to wait for a few years before welcoming a wheaten into their life.

While wheatens do require time and energy for training and grooming, any wheaten owner will tell you what a joy a wheaten can be. With all his affection and loyalty, a wheaten’s happy-go-lucky attitude is infectious! (Source: Wheatendog.com)
