Most of us would agree that rescuing a Soft Coated Wheaten
Terrier is a selfless way of giving a second chance to a dog to have a
loving life with owners who will offer the dog unconditional love… and
receive that love back. To get to this point, however, it is important that
you understand what rescue is all about, including our goal, procedures, and
additional facts to make an informed decision. This serves as a brief
summary of SCWTCSC Rescue.
Goal
We want to ensure that a rescue dog has the
opportunity to live in a permanent, loving and stable home that can offer
care, love, patience and skill that they deserve throughout the life of the
dog. We assist Wheatens who are no longer able to stay in their present
homes or who have been placed in a shelter.
What
Is A "Rescue" Wheaten And Are You The Right Owner?
While some Wheaten Terriers may have been abandoned or
abused, it is more likely that a ‘rescue’ dog was originally placed in a
situation that did not appreciate how much training and obligation a dog
is. Or, maybe the owner can no longer care for the dog because of their own
illness or a family emergency. Or, we may have received a call from the SPCA
or a related shelter informing us that they have in their possession a
Wheaten that was found.
We want to match that dog to a prospective owner. To do
that, we must learn about your commitment by making sure the dog will fit in
to your environment and lifestyle. A contract is required for both your and
our protection (and of course, for the dog) that you will do things like
maintain the health and welfare of the dog.
How It Works: Procedures
We are very selective in matching a dog to a person or
family. We foster all rescued Wheatens first to observe their behavior and
temperament. Our members contribute time and effort to do a variety of
things such as fostering the Wheaten, helping to clean him up, and finding
new homes. We ensure they receive a veterinary check up. Then we interview
prospective owners. We explain to you the advantages and concerns (so we
can be sure you understand) of owning a rescue dog.
We are very strict in our adoption requirements, as you
would want us to be. Just as we make sure the dog is physically and
emotionally sound to come to your home, we want you to be prepared and
educated about what it takes to preserve the temperament and character of
the dog.
Additional Facts
We are happy
to answer questions about how you can donate to the rescue fund (including
but not limited to giving time, foster care for a dog, supplies or related
things that you are able to do to help these dogs). If you are interested in
learning more about rescue, have concerns about a Wheaten you now own, or
are interested in adopting a rescue Wheaten, contact the Rescue
Coordinator listed below.
